TOP 5 TRENDS FROM BERLIN FASHION WEEK

Although the Fall 2011 runway shows of New York, London, Milan, and Paris have yet to be seen, Berlin’s recent fashion week offered some key trends that will soon find their way into your next fall wardrobe.

1. Colours
Dominating the runways, aside from the usual blacks and greys, were autumnal notes of chocolate and mocha browns, olive greens, and mustard yellows. To contrast the warm and dark tones were hints of bright, including oranges and greens (a particular favorite being Michael Sontag’s lime dress).

2. Outerwear
Although Oslo has banned fur from its fashion week, that hasn’t stopped many designers, including C’est Tout, Laurèl and Dawid Tomaszewski, from opting to infuse fur collars and jackets into their collections. For those opposed to fur, leather and wool jackets were as plentiful as their fur counterparts on the catwalk. Long wool gloves and cropped sleeves also appear to be a favorite for the upcoming season.

3. Hoods
Avoiding the frizzy hair associated with wool hats and toques, designers chose to add hoods to many of their tops and coats. Perhaps best exemplifying this style was A.F. Vandevorst, who kicked off Berlin fashion week with not only hair swept over models’ faces, but also hoods protecting them from the crisp wintery air.

4. Pants and Skirts
A wide array of styles could be seen at Berlin’s fashion week, with the wide legged trousers and skinny fit pants still in for next fall. Skirts, too, seem to range in hem length—some skimming the ground, whereas others fell slightly above knee length.

5. Sheer, Glitter, and Patterns
Despite the frigid weather sending chills down our spines, aside from traditional heavy knitting designers added more textures and patterns this season. Sheer and sheen were not the only design variants—patterns (think polka dots, tartan and feather prints) and lace were also prominent in the upcoming season’s collections, as could be seen with Irene Luft and Augustin Teboul.
