THE WEEKENDER: AUSTIN, TX

Austin is hosting the Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, and there’s no better reason to stop by Texas’ most compelling city than to check out bands as diverse as Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem and The Eagles all at once! But even if you don’t have tickets to the sold out festivities, we highly recommend a getaway to the (blue) heart of Texas this fall.

Where to Stay: There are many great boutique hotels in Austin, but we love the minimalist décor and great central location of Hotel San Jose on South Congress.

Good Eats: Whether you are enjoying the all-you-can-eat BBQ at Salt Lick out in the middle of Hill Country, eating the best bacon ice-cream and fried okra dinner ever at Foreign & Domestic, or scarfing town tacos in a trailer park outside the Torchy’s Tacos food truck, this is a town of good eats. There’s something for everyone, and even the flagship Whole Foods is sure to please whether you are a locavore or carnivore.

Trivial Pursuits: Fashionistas should head to one of the two locations of By George, which carries everything from Isabel Marant to Lanvin, and those who love a bargain might want to make the trek to the Neiman Marcus Last Call store near the airport, where we recently spotted brands such as Oscar de la Renta and Alaia discounted by as much as 90 percent. Our favorite store in Austin, however, is Uncommon Objects, which sells unique curios and vintage décor items that you never knew you needed…until now!
