SHADED ART
Lauren Bagliore Spring 2012
Native New Yorker Lauren Bagliore (pronounced bal-your-ay) presented her Spring 2012 collection, “Le Strade della Decostruzione,” or, “The Streets of Destruction” on the final day of LG Fashion Week.
Earlier this year Bagliore traveled the world in 30 days as part of her efforts to raise awareness about human trafficking. Visiting Thailand, Paris, Florence and even Qatar, Bagliore was truly inspired by what she saw. ”For me as a designer, I just felt, ‘Oh my goodness, what is similar amongst all these places that I can take away from?’ Bagliore told us before her show. “And I found that there is just a similar story of war, destruction and destitution. And amidst all that they’ve been through the last hundred years, there’s such a story of art and beauty.”
Maintaining colour simplicity, Bagliore was able to draw attention to the intricate details of her folds and cuts, using what seemed to be single pieces of fabric draped around the female frame. ”A lot of people always comment, ‘Oh Lauren you always use a dark colour palate, even for spring,’” said Bagliore. “But that’s just what I do and I think the more people get to know who I am and what I do as a designer, they’ll really get to know my aesthetic.”
One of our favourite pieces was the floor-length leather jacket with jagged, dangling edges that flowed with each movement. Diagonal lines were in abundance and we couldn’t resist the multi-patterned dress with a soft, abstract design contrasted by a distorted checker print that fell in all the right places. Topped off by exceptionally unique jewellery designs (a collaboration with EVStenroos), Bagliore brought a real edge and acceptance to the negative stigma surrounding black-and-white.
“That’s who my customer is,” said Bagliore. “She loves black, she loves grey, she loves the monochromatic colours and that’s what I love.”
