SHAPE SHIFTERS
Issey Miyake Fall 2011
With the grand piano echoing a melody at one end of the runway, black-clad assistants walked out with strips of paper in hand and began folding them, much like how one would with origami. The strips quickly morphed into items of clothing, and models soon came out onto the runway to wear and illustrate creative director Dai Fujiwara’s inspiration – paper folding – for his last collection. Models wearing fabric versions of the origami designs soon followed, with the actual show following. The collection itself was composed of variants on houndstooth and geometric patterns created from manipulations of the paper strips. Vibrant colours fluttered into the collection as the show continued, concluding with a dress comprised of layered multicoloured and monochromatic sheer fabrics.
