DARK SHADOWS
Cydelic by Choryin Fall 2011
Opening a fall show with a cream, bubble dress is certainly not what we expected to see at fashion week, but that’s exactly what new-comer Choryin Choi did with his debut collection for Cydelic by Choryin. Inspired by street culture in Hong Kong, where the designer was born before immigrating to Canada, the sometimes over-the-top collection (the closing look, a black bodiced dress, with a massive tulle skirt almost took out the front row!) payed homage avant garde thinkers like Tim Burton and Lady Gaga, with models looking like characters out of a the filmmaker’s latest flick (think super high hair and black, slick, weepy eyes). Oversized purple buttons on cream bubble dresses and jackets were playfully well-done and the grey felt balaclava faced skirt and wrap could easily be seen on one of today’s boundary pushing pop goddesses.
