Summer essentials for an escape to the cottage

Jaunting off to the cottage on the weekend is a regular occurance during the summer months. But just because you’re heading up north and enjoying the great outdoors doesn’t mean you should let yourself go and dress anything other than stylish. Here are some of our picks to stay practical and posh on your next trip to the cottage.

1. Layering is key for comfort at the cottage, but don’t sacrifice luxury for the sake of the outdoors. As a base, grab Alternative Apparel’s Model Silk Boyfriend Tee (shown in cairo) for a little something extra. $59, robberstore.wordpress.com

2. Nights up north can get chilly and the weather isn’t always predictable either. For an all purpose jacket, throw on the Ripstop Fisherman Jacket from Built by Wendy. We love the deep pockets that keep all our necessities on hand without us needing to tote a purse. $299, robberstore.wordpress.com

Don’t forget to bring some beauty essentials as well. For all-around sun coverage get 3. Dermalogica’s Solar Defense Wipes SPF15 ($28.60) and Dermalogica’s Waterblock 6. Solar Spray SPF30 ($49.50, 125ml). These two products both contain chemical sunscreens, Octinoxate and Oxybenzone to provide optimum UVA and UVB protection. We love the Solar Defense Wipes for the easy towelette application and for those of us prone to having spills in our bags. If you’re on the active side, try the Waterblock Solar Spray for its quick mist application, and because it’s incredibly water resistant, for up to 80 minutes. After playing sun goddess, relax with 5. Elizabeth Grant’s Cucumber Gel Mask ($35) to sooth and hydrate the skin. Elizabeth Grant’s patented anti-aging ingredient, Torricelumn, helps to rid the skin of any impurities you may have come across throughout the day. Dermalogica.ca and Elizabethgrant.com

4. Enjoying the lake is something we can’t really do in the city, so find a great stay-put bikini for everything from swimming to wake boarding. We like the print of this bikini by Joe Fresh. And with tops and bottoms sold separately, it’s easy to find the perfect fit. Top $14, bottom $12, joe.ca

7. The Stripey Double Layer Cardigan by Rittenhouse does double duty. The reversible cotton silk blend cardigan is an ash grey on one side and a jaunty red and navy horizontal stripe on the other. $199 on sale, robberstore.wordpress.com

8. A comfortable pair of shorts is a must-have when hiking trails or sitting by a campfire making s’mores. Our pick is the Cuff Short by Joe Fresh (in navy). At such a great price point, we can afford to pick up a few pairs to last us all summer long. $16, joe.ca

9. Leave your Louboutins at home and exchange them for a classic pair of kicks commonly referred to as the “Parisian Converse.” We love the Tennis Lacet Femme by Bensimon in white. $65, available at select The Bay locations in Canada, littleburgundyshoes.com

10. All these items ought to be tossed into a great tote. We adore the pop of yellow in this 3.1 Phillip Lim reversible tote. $395, at Holt Renfrew
