AVEDON’S WRITERS

Gagosian Gallery in Paris presents “Writers” by Richard Avedon

From now until July 28th, the Gagosian Gallery in Paris’ chic 8th arrondisement will be featuring late American photographer Richard Avedon’s series on writers. Captured between the 1950s and 1970s, the portrait series includes the likes of Truman Capote, Allen Ginsberg, and more. The realization of such an exhibit has been the product of the close working relationship formed between the gallery and The Richard Avedon Foundation, which serves as a repository for Avedon’s work.
4 rue de Ponthieu, 75008 Paris. Telephone: +33 1 75 00 05 92. Hours: Tue-Sat 11-7

OPPOSITES ATTRACT

Viviane Sassen for Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival

Combining human figures and naturalistic elements photographer Viviane Sassen, born and bred in Amsterdam, portrays through her work a vision of Africa and perception of the world around us, as part of the Dynamic Landscape exhibition at MOCCA Gallery. On until May 31st (please get there this weekend!), this powerful display of captivating imagery depicts a story of an intimate yet distant connection of a place that leaves you with a sense of hope, yet despair. Telling this story through bold colour, engaging environments and a hint of mystery, this exhibition will show this viewer different perspective of the way they view the most simplistic of surroundings.

If you’re a beauty buff, you’ll love tracing the history and evolution of perfume objects and manufacturing tools and the centuries’ worth of secrets and knowledge are unveiled each day to the museum’s many guests.

A SHOW FOR A SHOWMAN

Alexander McQueen at the Met Museum

“You’ve got to know the rules to break them. That’s what I’m here for, to demolish the rules but to keep the tradition.”—Alexander McQueen

Spanning the career of one of fashion’s greatest, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” is a stunning thematic (rather than chronological) retrospective of designs and collaborations from McQueen’s almost two decades in fashion through the lens of Romanticism. The exhibition opens with two contrasting showpieces, a red gown made from dyed medical slides and a white dress composed of bleached razor clam shells, and continues with more muted pieces from McQueen’s masters graduate collection entitled “Jack the Ripper Stalks His Victims,” and tailored wool separates from the Taxi Driver collection that echo’ed his Saville Row training in their precise construction. “I spent a long time learning how to construct clothes, which is important to do before you can deconstruct them,” McQueen once said. FASHION CRUSH

The Robert George/Lacoste collection

From a sketched of the now world famous Lacoste crocodile, created by Robert George, a close friend of tennis player Rene Lacoste, comes the inspiration behind a limited edition collection of canvas handbags, totes, cases and pouches, available at Lacoste boutiques in Canada next month. We’re thinking this flat, cross body linen and cotton camo purse or even the mini croc printed canvas pouch is the perfect way to man-up our seemingly girlie summer wardrobe.

The Robert George line at Lacoste retails for $45 to $225.
