BABY STEINBERG SPRING 2012

LG Fashion Week Preview

In response to the high demand to get up close and personal with her creations, fashion designer Baby Steinberg held a preview of her upcoming Spring 2012 collection and FrontRowMag had a chance to talk to the Brazilian-Canadian artiste.

Showcasing three key looks, all made from tiny pieces of fabric that were discarded from textile factories in Brazil because of its presumed uselessness, Steinberg took inspiration from using the same material for crafts while working with children in impoverished areas of the country. “From seeing them work and make little crafts, I thought, ‘Hmm, I could make something nice from that.’ ” Steinberg told us. “So, I brought back a bag full and I started playing. I started making clothing with this.”

The theme for this year’s collection, which will be showing pn October 21st at LG Fashion Week in Toronto, is called Remnants and features upcycled fabrics. The pieces, while still made of discarded materials, are much more wearable, something that was very important to the designer this season. “Some of my pieces from last year were wearable, yes, but fragile. You can’t just jump in a cab with it,” Steinberg said. “Now, you can jump in a cab, get to the party and have a conversation piece.”

With a vibrant colour palette, sexy silhouettes and an environmentally friendly concept, Steinberg is sure to impact the Toronto runway with looks that range from $450-$3,000. “Being Brazilian, I always like a saucy look—very sexy, feminine. I like dresses. I wear very few pants. Even in the cold, cold winter, I still wear a dress,” said Steinberg. “I’ll be bringing the heat of Brazil to Canada Cool.”
