TOUGH CHIC

Assad Mounser Spring 2011

We first met New York-based designer Amanda Assad Mounser when she worked for shoe-designer Alejandro Ingelmo, and have been obsessed with her unique glam rock jewelry line since its debut last year. For her Spring 2011 collection, entitled Neo Conquistador, Mounser mixes her signature accoutrements such as bullet charms, crosses, chains and studs with bold new elements. Bright colored gemstones and beads blend effortlessly into the mix, adding a much-welcomed explosion of color and whimsy to create something a little more unexpected. Our favorite piece from this season? The Assad Mounser Cataclysm Collar, which would certainly liven up even our most minimalistic Spring frock.

PRETTY WOMAN

3.1 Phillip Lim Spring 2011

We missed the Phillip Lim show last month for the first time in years, due to a scheduling conflict, and couldn’t wait to inspect the collection up close and personal at the designer’s press Open House, held last week in New York City. In a palette of dusty neutrals and soft pastels, the season’s stand-out pieces are sharp silk blazers, a top covered in tiny leather paillettes, and sheer silk organza blouses and dresses matched with slouchy knits. This was Lim’s first season showing his own shoes (he has collaborated with Christian Louboutin in previous seasons), and the wood and leather platform sandals pair beautifully with the clothes and Lim’s compact suede and leather totes. Spring ahead, we say!

THE WEEKENDER: AUSTIN, TX

Austin is hosting the Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, and there’s no better reason to stop by Texas’ most compelling city than to check out bands as diverse as Vampire Weekend, LCD Soundsystem and The Eagles all at once! But even if you don’t have tickets to the sold out festivities, we highly recommend a getaway to the (blue) heart of Texas this fall. Read More…

INSPIRED BY…

Joeffer Caoc’s Spring 2011 Collection

There are very few Canadian fashion designers who can say that they taught supermodel Daria Werbowy how to walk in heels, yet Filipino-Canadian designer Joeffer Caoc has done that, and accomplished much more, in the 15 years that he’s been designing stunning gowns and power suits in downtown Toronto. As the designer prepares to present his eponymous Spring 2011 collection at LG Fashion Week in October, we stopped by the studio to get a sneak peek at his vision for the upcoming season.

FRM: What have you been up to?
JC: I have been focusing on the business end of the company the past few seasons, but I will have a presentation for the Spring 2011 collection. I’ve also been designing a line for Winners under the Misura label. It is separate from my signature Joeffer Caoc line and mainly consists of simplified versions of the “greatest hits” from my design archive.

FRM: Where do you find inspiration?
JC: For inspiration, I love traveling to New York. My brother lives there and so I visit him often. I’ve also been watching Mad Men and Gossip Girl when I have the time, and listening to M83, Tiesto, and Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits non-stop in the studio!

I’ve also been doing a lot of trunk shows. You learn a lot from people’s realities – how they wear the clothes and where they need to go. That plays a huge part in my design process now. I have a signature look, but I definitely take the customers’ comments into consideration. Read More…

BEAUTIFUL GIRLS

Walter Chin’s 25 Nudes at Milk Gallery

If you happen to be in New York City in the next two weeks, do pop by Milk Gallery to check out photographer Walter Chin’s arresting “25 Nudes,” an exhibition of larger-than-life portraits that just opened on September 21. The Ryerson University graduate, born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and raised in Toronto, shoots for the likes of W and Vanity Fair, and his appreciation of the female form is very much evident in the curated images on display. Some of the world’s most beautiful women, including Gisele Bündchen and Lara Stone, pose for Chin’s beautifully-lit photographs, several of which are mounted on rotating blocks, so that the body parts appear almost interchangeable.

Milk Gallery, 450 West 15th street, New York, NY. September 21-October 9.
