Dieppa Restrepo’s Colourful Flats

We are obsessed with Andrea Vargas Dieppa and Elisa Restrepo’s androgynous footwear label, Dieppa Restrepo. Since the line was launched just a few seasons ago, its classic designs and playful sensibility have captured the imagination of fashion insiders and downtown scenesters alike. Colourful, bold and comfortable, Dieppa Restrepo’s brogues and penny loafers are designed in Manhattan’s Lower East Side and handmade in Mexico in supple suede and shiny patent leathers. The only problem? Narrowing down which colors and styles to order from the kaleidoscope of options available!

Summer Scarves with a Conscience

Recent Parsons graduate Alexandra Taylor‘s handmade-in-NYC wool and silk scarves come in beautiful muted hues and unique abstract prints. “I design all the prints on the scarves, which are digitally printed,” Taylor explains to FRM. “The prints are abstract motifs of anatomical images of mosquitoes in various color ways and pattern styles.” Best of all, they are also designed to do good. With each scarf purchase, $10 is donated to the United Nations Foundation’s Nothing But Nets campaign, which is working to fight the spread of malaria by providing mosquito nets to households in Africa. An accessory with both style and substance? Consider us committed to the cause.

DESIGNER ON THE RISE

British wunderkind J.W. Anderson

While Irish fashion designer Jonathan Anderson has been presenting a menswear line since 2008 in London, it is the buzz surrounding his womenswear collection for Fall 2011 which has landed him squarely in the pages of magazines such as Interview and American Vogue with increasing regularity on this side of the pond. “The collections were based on the idea of cubic sub-cultural groups, large format patchwork and that the back can hide different meaning,” Anderson reveals in an email interview with FRM. Critically applauded, the boyish collection effortlessly incorporates traditional fabrics and finishes with modern silhouettes and appropriately preppy details. While Anderson has found “working out a different architecture for the woman’s body” to be a challenge, the former actor and stylist to celebrities such as Rufus Wainright has a clear eye for designing pieces that are both wearable and covetable, classic and quirky. We can’t wait to see more of this young talent in action when his new online concept store opens in September!
