MOD-ERNIST
Ashtiani Spring 2012
Toronto-based Golnaz Ashtiani, winner of this year’s Toronton Fashion Incubator’s New Label prize, debuted her Spring 2012 line in a double header presentation with Calgary-native Caitlin Power on Day 4 of LG Fashion Week. The collection featured an interesting colour palette, combining unlikely hues such as muted teal and orange. Silhouettes were geometric and the majority of pieces were form-fitted to really emphasize the female frame. And the inspiration? “The most important inspiration for me was this movie, Roman Holiday, which emphasized femininity,” Ashtiani told FrontRowMag.com. “She’s a princess, she goes and is having fun in Rome, but then later she has to adopt a professional life for herself. That was the whole story behind the collection.”
Our favourite piece was the opener—a solid mauve onesie with a wave of fabric cascading from the left shoulder to right leg. The looks were simple yet highly engaging. “It was good that everything in the show was white because it really went with the whole collection. It was minimal which was what I wanted,” said Ashtiani. “We just kept it simple because most of the outfits were complicated with lots of details.” The flowing lines appeared soft and enhanced the delicacy of the fabrics and the graphic quality of the garments, with draping that would flatter almost any woman’s curves, Ashtiani presented a line worthy of a princess.
