BRING ON SPRING

Canadian fashion icon Alfred Sung creates an outdoor collection for this weekend’s Interior Design Show

Alfred Sung, and long-time business partners the Mimran family (they’ve been together since 1979 in fact!), launched a limited edition collection of outdoor furniture called Blackwatch, just in time for this weekend’s Interior Design Show in Toronto. Inspired by plaids, Blackwatch, and the rest of the Alfred Sung outdoor collection, is like a dream come true for the Chinese-born, Canadian fashion designer. Having launched Club Monaco, a line of fragrances and ready-to-wear and bridal collections, furniture design was a natural step for Sung, who trained at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, as well as Parsons. “I do believe that fashion and home design is related because it’s about a lifestyle,” Sung told FrontRowMag.com at an intimate event held at the Mimran Group’s showroom this week. “What I like personally in fashion, is similar to what I like in furniture—I like simple, clean and sleek. A person dresses a certain way, and they want to furnish their house a certain way.”

Available only through the special order from The Bay at the IDS, the hand-woven, water-resistant faux wicker was inspired by the designer’s own love of plaids, Sung admitted with a laugh that he can’t walk by a tartan item without making a purchase.

As for where Sung sees the future of fashion and design going? It’s all in our youth. “The younger generation puts so much detail into their home,” the approachable designer told FRM. “We weren’t exposed to as much information as when we were younger. People are now developing a greater interest in what they like, and they want a comfortable and clean environment to go home to.”
