SWEET TOOTH FOR HARD CANDY

With Weezer’s latest tour being the Pinkerton-Blue Album Tour and Dr. Martens hitting the feet of fashionistas everywhere, it’s clear to see the ’90s are back. So what would a ’90s comeback be without our favourite beauty line from the decade of grunge, Hard Candy? Despite the somewhat revamped packaging, everything inside still consists of the same high end formulas. Another welcomed change is that we no longer have to save our allowances to buy the products since everything is now priced under $10 and is available exclusively at Walmart. Read More…

AGANOVICH SPRING 2011

Inviting guests to a private courtyard in the Marais, designer Nana Aganovich unveiled her spring/summer 2011 collection with quite a creative showing. Models entered the courtyard in Aganovich’s creations, mostly featuring black and white, which played on curves and structure. Tie-dye patterns and exaggerated volumes crept into the collection as each subsequent piece followed as a seemingly artistic evolution, so as to guide the eyes to the final look with stylistic ease—a voluminous light pink dress that stood apart from the rest of the collection, yet still incorporated its key elements.

Joeffer Caoc’s Spring 2011 Collection

There are very few Canadian fashion designers who can say that they taught supermodel Daria Werbowy how to walk in heels, yet Filipino-Canadian designer Joeffer Caoc has done that, and accomplished much more, in the 15 years that he’s been designing stunning gowns and power suits in downtown Toronto. As the designer prepares to present his eponymous Spring 2011 collection at LG Fashion Week in October, we stopped by the studio to get a sneak peek at his vision for the upcoming season.

FRM: What have you been up to?
JC: I have been focusing on the business end of the company the past few seasons, but I will have a presentation for the Spring 2011 collection. I’ve also been designing a line for Winners under the Misura label. It is separate from my signature Joeffer Caoc line and mainly consists of simplified versions of the “greatest hits” from my design archive.

FRM: Where do you find inspiration?
JC: For inspiration, I love traveling to New York. My brother lives there and so I visit him often. I’ve also been watching Mad Men and Gossip Girl when I have the time, and listening to M83, Tiesto, and Fleetwood Mac’s Greatest Hits non-stop in the studio!

I’ve also been doing a lot of trunk shows. You learn a lot from people’s realities – how they wear the clothes and where they need to go. That plays a huge part in my design process now. I have a signature look, but I definitely take the customers’ comments into consideration. Read More…

PERSONALIZING WITH PERSONA

Recently FrontRowMag.com stopped by the Hazelton Hotel to preview Persona, a new line of jewelry that is a modern take on the traditional charm bracelet. Selecting from various lengths of leather cords or sterling silver chains to serve as a base for any one of the hundreds of charms allows anyone to create a personalized bracelet, necklace or earrings that can be easily customized by adding or swapping out new charms and beads. Walter Chin’s 25 Nudes at Milk Gallery

If you happen to be in New York City in the next two weeks, do pop by Milk Gallery to check out photographer Walter Chin’s arresting “25 Nudes,” an exhibition of larger-than-life portraits that just opened on September 21. The Ryerson University graduate, born in Montego Bay, Jamaica and raised in Toronto, shoots for the likes of W and Vanity Fair, and his appreciation of the female form is very much evident in the curated images on display. Some of the world’s most beautiful women, including Gisele Bündchen and Lara Stone, pose for Chin’s beautifully-lit photographs, several of which are mounted on rotating blocks, so that the body parts appear almost interchangeable.

Milk Gallery, 450 West 15th street, New York, NY. September 21-October 9.
